Transition Year

Transition Year is a one year programme which provides a bridge to enable students make the transition from Junior to Senior Cycle. We have devised a programme which encourages the personal and social development of students. It also helps to prepare them for the Leaving Cert Programme , further study and adult and working life. Students undertaking the Transition Year Programme will undertake an intensive curriculum over the course of the academic year. This will include a 'hands on' approach in many areas.

Core Subjects:

Irish, English, Maths, Religion, Modern Foreign Languages, Recreational studies, Home Economics, Humanities Studies (History & Geography) and Guidance.

Subject Sampling:

Construction Studies, Graphics, Engineering, Business, Accounting, Art, Coaching, Wellbeing, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Agricultural Science).

Transition Year Specific Activities Year Long Modules:

Innovation and Enterprise Education (Mini Company), Gaisce, Future Leaders and Life Skills.

Example of Modules completed throughout the Year:

Dance-Jiving, Set Dancing, Swimming/Life Saving, First Aid, Photography, Road Safety and Driving Theory, Future Leaders GAA, Self Defense, Local Community Work, Public Speaking.

Tours and Day Trips:

Transition Year students get the opportunity to go on a Cultural Exchange Trip as part of their Modern Foreign languages studies.

Throughout the year students go on a variety of day trips e.g Team Bonding trips, Local History Trip, College Open Days etc.

Work Experience:

Takes place in 3 blocks which consist of 6 Fridays. We advise that your son/daughter would use at least two of the work experience blocks to try out career choices that they are hoping to pursue, the third block might be used to try get a summer job.

Transitions Year gives students an opportunity to:

  • Discover more about your own natural skills and talents.
  • Learn more about working as part of a team.
  • Discover more about job and career opportunities beyond school.
  • Sample and discover new subjects.
  • Build a solid foundation of skills for the Leaving Certificate.
  • Undertake projects on topics that interest you.
  • Make informed choices about LC Subjects.
  • Practice and develop oral presentation skills.
  • Practice developing Project Management skills and improve time management skills.
  • Explore new pastimes and extra-curricular activities.
  • Add a broad range experiences and qualifications to your CV.
  • Become a more independent learner.
  • Develop a mature student teacher relationship.
  • Learn about leadership, co-operation and dealing with conflict.
  • Explore the possibilities offered by computers and IT.
  • Take part in outdoor pursuits.
